Apparently several people follow it, and we wanted to be able to keep a good running history of events for the family, so we are moving. We will not be updating this blog any longer, unless we start another adoption, lol. Our new family blog will be HERE! I'm hoping we will get the flickr page setup, and have a good repository of pictures and info between the blog and flickr. We're also on facebook, so look us up there for even more random updates!

Days 12 - 16

Day 16 = GO HOME! YAY!

Day 15 – Thursday, Decemeber 3, 2009

Ray and Nancy got to head out today- lucky! We didn't do anything but finish shopping, pack, and that's about it. We're worn out and so ready to head home… so I will leave you with a few random thoughts instead. Ha ha. Oh, and please wish us a safe, uneventful journey home. =) We all feel as if we are stuck in the sequel to Groundhog Day.

Observations about China:

- The beds are hard.

- The cartoons and commercials are hilarious. Especially for things you know and love- like the McRib. C'mon, would you really eat a McRib in China?

- The heat either works too well, or doesn't work. And it's either heat or air for the entire building.

- Spitting in public is normal (though extremely gross!). People spit everywhere- even the floors of 5 star hotels.

- Driving is a free-for-all. If the light is red, but you see a spot- go for it. If there is room to go around on the sidewalk, go for it. If you want people to move- honk at them. Driving here would be insanely scary.

- The pollution really, truly is terrible and has to be seen for yourself to be understood.

- Did I mention the beds are hard?

- Food is never, ever served hot. Consider yourself lucky if it is warm. Also, they don't care if you order a drink, and won't ask about it if you forget.

- Breakfast Buffets have a weird mix of food on them, like baked beans and dim sum.

- The water is terrible in appearance. I wouldn't even consider drinking it, it is yellow. Not even after boiling it. Nope, no sir. And some people here swim naked in it!

- People are always extremely surprised to discover that either of us speak Mandarin. They also think we are VERY young to be parents.

- Be careful what you order... a drink with frog guts in it is exactly what it says it is.

- There is no such thing as personal space in China. It is crowded and people go where they can fit whenever they want. Politeness is also an oddity.

- Order also does not pertain. You don't really stand in line for a buffet- you shove in where you can to get what you want, and who cares if you are messing up the 20 people who were going the other way...

- There is no such thing as non-smoking-- either rooms or seats in restaurants. Many people perform their job functions while puffing away (including food service).

- There are lots of bows on cars- we haven't figured this one out- and the car brands and names are all odd.

- As the water is undrinkable, water fountains are unheard of.

- The Chinese have odd Chinese-distinct fashion sense.

Things I miss about America:

- People (my kid, family, friends, and dogs)

- My house & bed

- Car & clean clothes!

- cheese

- Drinkable tap water

- Clean air

- Usable electrical outlets

- TV, strangely enough

- Ability to go to whatever internet site I want!

- Hot food

- Ice, and cold drinks

- Comfortable furniture

- People who talk slow

Day 14 – Wednesday, December 2, 2009

We opted for leisurely shopping today instead of the trip to the zoo. We heard the zoo is sad by our standards and has stuff like armadillos and turkeys- so we don't really need to see that. In the afternoon, we headed to the US Consulate to take the oath. They had three windows opened and it moved quickly (especially for a govt office). It was not as long as I expected and we had to listen to the lady tell us to sign up for travel on the government website and she was really upset that there were babies crying. HAHA! We were used to that. And then we promised, with lots of pretty words, that we didn't lie to the US government to get the baby and that was it. Then we went back. Then we went shopping and ate at Lucy's! YAY! Ying is rough at sleepy-time, and is pitching many fits. I think this is a good sign, but can't wait to get home to deal with her the way I think is best. At home, I won't be worried if I keep the entire 10th floor of the hotel awake with a screaming kid. ;)

Day 13 – Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Today is our consulate appointment. Turns out- we don't even go to it. Grace and Maggie go for us and take our packet. They called and said everything was fine and that the consulate didn't even ask about shots- YAY! So, we're good to go- all we have left is the oath. We did group pictures at the red couches today- that was interesting, but very cute. Ying was very pleased to be wearing her squeaky shoes. We promptly took the squeaker out as soon as someone told us you could remove it. HA HA! That was a terrible squeak, not sure I would let her walk much if she was wearing them. Maybe it promotes kids being carried rather than walking. Heh. We opted to go on the Pearl River cruise. I thought 200 yuan a piece wasn't bad for dinner and a cruise. Well, dinner was a buffet and so very Chinese, I couldn't eat anything except a piece of watermelon. Jason didn't even eat anything. The view from the top deck with all the lights was neat though, but I certainly wouldn't go on it again. We ended up ordering room service when we got back, even though it was very pricey!

Today was pretty much a free day. We had a tour lined up to go see an old Buddhist temple, and an old family house, and then off to a small shop to do some shopping. Breakfast was pretty good, we tested Ying Ying with some eggs to see if she would break out. She seemed fine, and liked the eggs, so I feel a little better about her having to get her immunizations if they make us get them. We finished breakfast and wandered over to the group to get ready to head out to the temple.

The temple was actually really amazing. 1500 years old I believe is what they dated it, and it was fairly large considering they called it a "small temple". It had a very large pagoda inside which was much taller that I had anticipated. It has started to lean though and they wouldn't let us climb it, L They did offer a Buddhist blessing, which a lot of the families participated in. We had to go in and take our shoes off, and kneel in front of 3 huge statues while the monk chanted and hit a little drum and bell. He splashed a little holy water or oil on us and we bowed 3 times and that was it. It was very nice and peaceful, most of the kids even sat the whole time, Ying Ying included. Afterwards we headed to the Chen House, which is an old family house. Its not really so much a house is it is temple for the Chen family. It was collaboratively built and funded by many of the Chen families from the province. They gather in it a couple of times a year to honor and worship their ancestors. They had several examples inside of the ivory/jade carving and embroidery crafts that the region and family are known for creating. We only stayed for about 40 minutes, so I was kind of rushing around to keep the kid entertained, and so I could see the layout and architecture of the house, while Robyn was taking lots of pictures of the exhibits and the house itself.

Our next stop was to a small shop, so we could do some shopping. Our guides said that the prices were good, and that there was no haggling here. We didn't buy much, just a couple of shirts and trinkets for gifts. Most of the merchandise seemed like things we could get back home, and other than the jewelry(which I have no idea about pricing or availability) it all seemed to be the same price range. I didn't really want to buy something here just for the sake of buying something, so we pretty much wandered around until the group was ready. Ying Ying was happy to sit in her stroller so we just rode up and down the aisles the majority of the time. We headed back to the hotel after this, and decided to order some pizza from Papa Johns. Finally, REAL American food! It took about an hour to get here, which was almost twice the quoted time, and then we had to search for the delivery guy, because security won't let them come inside. We finally found him standing outside the hotel by his bicycle. The prices were pretty American, no cheap stuff here. It tasted great, and Ying Ying loved it too. We had a group diner planned for 5 that afternoon, but we figured we'd eat until we were stuffed. The dinner was at a Thai place, so if we didn't like the food, it would be ok since we probably wouldn't be too hungry anyways. We took a little nap before dinner, which Ying needed. She actually cried a bit to get into the bed with me, and promptly leaned back on the pillows and fell asleep. When we woke up we headed downstairs for dinner with the rest of the group. The first thing the brought us was shrimp chips, which Robyn was going to eat until I let her know what they were, J Robyn ended up getting ice cream, and feeding Ying Ying some vegetables. I got a prawn soup that was the hottest thing they had listed on the menu, along with a bottle of water, a beer, and a Pineapple and Chinese forest frog drink. Initially I thought that 'Chinese forest frog' was some kind of bad translation for a type pf fruit or something along those lines. Turns out it was dead on, its actually the internal organs of a forest fogs, ground up, and dumped in the drink. Since I wasn't really hungry, I got it anyways. The soup was ok, I mainly got it to see how hot it was. I ate the prawn out of it, and tried one of the little peppers in it. It was very hot, but I was done with it after a few bites and moved on to the frog drink. I didn't take any time to initially examine it, that would have detoured me from trying it. It really just tasted like a pineapple punch with lots of pulp in it. The organs are apparently pretty clear, and you could see them at the top. They didn't seem to have any real taste to them, and pineapple is kind of overpowering.

We walked back to the hotel after surviving dinner and finally stopped in one of the local shops to look around. Its kind of like Gatlinburg or some little tourist town where all the shops have basically the same t-shirts, toys and knick-knacks. We bought a few t-shirts, and some shoes and outfits for Ying Ying. The shop people were very nice, they loved that babies, and thought it was funny that we could speak a little Mandarin. Of course every 3 or 4 sentences would be followed with a "We have very pretty (insert product here)! I will sell to you cheap!" Robyn gathered her things, and even haggled a bit with the lady and bought our loot. The shop owners even gave the kids a little stuffed toy of some sort for free, which was nice, but Ying could have cared less about it. We made it back to the hotel and performed our nightly attempt at a ritual of bathing and then going to bed. Ying Ying went for it this time, and didn't fuss or anything after bath-time and actually went to sleep. Tomorrow we have a trip to the pearl market off the island. Neither of us is interested in it, but we have 4 days left to burn, and I'm sure the local shops will not provide us with much entertainment after a day or two.

-jason

We came back for nappy time, and Ying pitched a terrible fit until daddy held her to go to sleep. She slept with me because daddy put her in the bed after she was knocked out, but I could not sleep- it was very loud in the hotel!! At 3, I headed to Grace's room to do yet more paperwork. Only problem was – I didn't know where Grace's room was! I headed back to the room and called her cell phone to find out. So, I strolled in 10 minutes late… then I couldn't find the paper I needed because everything was out of order from the mad dash to find something outlining what she was allergic to at the clinic. I felt like an idiot. Oh well. After everyone else finished and the next wave of people were in there, Ray helped me sort papers and I finally found it and was able to finish.

I went down to the play room and chatted with folks for a while. The playroom, sponsored by Mattel is REALLY nice!!!!! Ying loves all the little kids, and the bigger kids too. There was one little boy who was really picking on her and upsetting her, but he left after a while. It started getting crowded and we were hungry, so we left too. We wanted to go to 7/11, so we decided to go with Nancy & Ray to Lucy's – everyone raves about the food at Lucy's. It was quite good. Ying devoured her vegetable plate, and Kai was pretty good too! We went through 7/11 and found some more of Ying's custard cakes (one of which Jason has already eaten! HA) and headed back for bathtime. I'm currently trying to decide if Ying will be awake long enough to call Grammy & Poppy since we have a tour at 9 am tomorrow. She may not make it! =) We can always call tomorrow night though.

So, they took my hairspray at security, even though it's been in my carryon all along. I will have to go on a crusade to find hair spray. The plane was a bit delayed taking off and there was lots of confusion getting the Americans on board (so many strollers!)- so they just let all the Chinese people go in front of us, and then made us check bags when they ran out of carryon space. Go figure. Oh well. Ying was pretty good on the flight, we kept her entertained with food and toys and she got to sit with daddy most of the flight. The seats are pretty small on these planes. I found the flight excruciating. I slipped in the shower and felt pretty useless the whole day. I had to pick Ying up and hold her while she bawled when Jason left to check the luggage. She cried the entire half hour too, and afterward my back was KILLING me. Sitting on the plane was not fun either. Or the bus. LOL. I had high hopes for the White Swan, that the beds would be soft and perfect… no such luck! The beds have been progressively harder. Jason loves them, and I'm in agony after hurting my back. If I hadn't hurt it, I'd be fine. But, it is just like sleeping on the floor. Even the pillows are hard- how they manage that I don't know. Ying is a complete Daddy's girl. We will have to break her of that when we get home. We came in very late to the hotel, so didn't get to go to sleep until after midnight. Ying, for some reason, was fighting going to sleep too. She cried for several minutes before settling down finally (I think daddy picked her up). And of course, they start us right off with an early morning. =)

--
--"We never touch people so lightly that we do not leave a trace"

Happy Thanksgiving!!!! Have we really been here 9 days? Wow. Please pray for the Daniels' family. They are leaving today and their little girl (the blue baby I've been talking about) is staying here in China. She is in desperate need of surgery and is not well enough to travel. Their cardiologist from home viewed her files- fortunately they had up to date readings on her- and said he gave her a 50/50 chance of surviving a flight (even just to Guangzhou, not the long one home) – and that was if she was lucky. They were extremely fortunate that Josh and Lilly just happened to be here at this time (believe in divine providence anyone? I do.)—and they have worked very hard to try to get things straightened out. Their little girl will be taking the train to Beijing, and will be trying to get her weight up to 7k so she can have surgery (she currently weighs 6). The family will be paying half of the surgery and the other half will be covered by a charity called Philip Hayden. Since it will not cost the orphanage, they are hoping there will not be any issues with this. They have 90 days for her to have surgery and they could still come back to take her home with them. It is also possible to apply for a Travel Approval extension. I am sure this was the best decision for the baby, but it was probably the hardest decision the Daniels have had to make. They could definitely use some prayers for a happy ending to all of their trials. While they were packing to leave, the rest of us went to the Henan museum. The city we are in- Zhengzhou- used to be called Zhongzhou (zhong is middle in Chinese), and has been the capital of China 4 different times in the past. It is on the Yellow River, which has made it an important distribution area. The museum was very interesting, and covered thousands of years of history. Many of the items in there were from BC. Some of the time, it seemed like we (the white people) were the main attraction, and many of us were asked to be in pictures with random Chinese people. We are the 1st large group to adopt from here, so it is something of a novelty to see foreigners together around here. Hopefully, a lot of my pictures turned out well, I think Ying may like to see them when she is older. Ying only wanted Daddy to carry her around the museum- hee hee- she's a Daddy's girl already!

Ying is quite a character. We've had several tantrums today (this afternoon). She does not like to be told 'no' on something she wants. She is very cute and special needs, so I am sure she has not heard 'no' often in her short life. We don't like how little she talks, but we are trying to take it easy on her. She threw a fit because I wouldn't let her use the hotel phone and she cried for prolly 30 mins. Oh well, heh. That doesn't work so well with mommy & daddy. She'll learn, we aren't like her Chinese 'ai yi's and she can't do whatever she wants. I think it is very normal for her to test boundaries, and also for her to feel the grief once she does start crying. I actually like that she is spirited, I think it is a good sign. I feel bad because I think it is just plain adorable when she cries, and I want to just smile at her and watch- she'll probably get very mad at me for that when she is older and understands more. For Ying's 1st Thanksgiving- We had Thanksgiving turkey dinner at the restaurant in the hotel – it wasn't that bad. It was very different though. Everyone loves happy little Ying, the Chinese women get quite a kick out of her showing people her different body parts. We do have a lot to be thankful for this year! Daddy doesn't like it when his little girl cries though, she is going to have a rough adjustment I think for a short while. I will be 'thankful' to head out for Guangzhou tomorrow—I literally have over a dozen mosquito bites on me. And I'm told the whiteys aren't such a novelty there where we are going, and there is more shopping and food. Almost everyone has been quite friendly here though, so I'm not complaining.

--
--"We never touch people so lightly that we do not leave a trace"
<div think Jason is still struggling with sleeping. We talked to Grammy, Poppy, and Matt this morning. Matt and Ying were kinda playing patty-cake and peek-a-boo over Skype. I really want to go home to my little boy. We ate breakfast and played in the playroom for a while and that's about it. I am covered in mosquito bites, but they don't seem to be biting anyone else! I have three on my face, one on my pinky finger, one at the base of my thumb, one on my neck, one on the EDGE or my ear, and two on my wrist!!! They itch like crazy too. I think they must be getting in the room when we open the window to keep from suffocating. I had a cheeseburger from the hotel restaurant and it was so, so, so good!!! Ying tricked Daddy and got to sleep in bed with him last night! HA! The beds are not quite the size of a full size bed, and we have each been sleeping in our own separate bed. I think he was just too tired to get up and put her in the crib after she fell asleep. =) We also played in the playroom but forgot the camera, we will have to go back with it Friday. Jason has found many more pictures of our Ying online, they have even posted pictures of her adoption day and us—I can't wait to get home and ask NaiNai what it really says. We will also have to steal all the extra pictures, but it would mean a lot to have the text around for Ying when she is older and wants to know. for the worst possible outcome for today. You hear all kinds of stories about how people just have a crying baby tossed at them and that is it- no opportunity to ask any questions or anything. Also, often the babies are in terrible condition under their 20 layers of clothes – so we were fully expecting this. Our group had a wide array of kids, ages, and experiences. Some did have the baby handed over by people with no answers to any questions they might have. Some were not in the best condition at all. All of there were in at least 4 layers of clothes. For the most part the babies seemed to be in decent health, though most of them also seem to have a cold of varying degrees.

We were the ones who got the 'storybook' Gotchya Day. Four caretakers were with Ying to help transition her. They recognized us right away from our picture books and they brought her over to us. They were very excited and happy. They were just plain wonderful. She was in many layers of clothes, so all you could see was her face – and it looked exactly like my little doll from her pictures. I can never be thankful enough to realize that she has been loved and cared for while with these people. You could absolutely tell that they loved her very much. I was fine until a couple of them started tearing up, then my eyes got teary as well. I can't imagine being in their shoes and how very hard that must be. They are truly special people to do what they do. Even the director was very attached to Ying, unusual for Chinese men I believe, to show something like that. You could tell they had been showing her our pictures and she knew that I was Mama. They were so wonderful, they brought us two bags full of things to help take care of her – clothes, tissues, wipes, diapers, handmade clothes, her blanket, toys, snacks. It was extremely overwhelming, considering most only got the clothes on their kids' back. Also considering how little these people have to give.

These were her actual daily caregivers. Ying is the first foreign adoption from PingDingShan. I hope they will adopt more out if this is how well all the kids are treated there- they have a wonderful program going. One of the caretakers spoke very good English and told us that Ying has actually been in a care home in Beijing because of her special needs since she was 3 months old, but her orphanage paid for it. They took the train from there to bring her to us. They also said they had taken her to see some of the sights and would email us the pictures from there. They gave us a wonderful letter from them that will mean a lot to her when she is older, and also a picture book of all her caretakers and friends from the orphanage. It was the sweetest thing in the world. They were upset about leaving her and hid in the hallway for quite a while to watch her as she adjusted to us. She was just fine with us, and I think she prefers Daddy. I truly could never thank these people enough for loving her, and I know they must be missing her terribly. That is a wonderful gift to give to a child.

Ying fell asleep on my shoulder on the bus, and for the most part has been quite good. She doesn't say many words, probably due to the pallet, but she understands quite a bit and communicates with her hands. Other families in our group have had an easy transition, and some have been rough. One baby they knew was a cryer- and she has been crying, though I'm told adjusting well when she is in the hotel room with her family. One lady's mother passed away the night before we got our babies. One of the babies had information from the foster family and a note for the baby wrapped up and hidden in her pacifier that was under her many layers of clothes (this is frowned upon by the CCAA I understand), one set of people have a 'blue baby' who is in very serious condition and I don't believe they are going to be allowed to adopt her. They could use some prayers. The 'blue baby' syndrome is often cause by the same heart condition Ying had that was operated on and fixed (tetralogy of fallot). They baby and her appearance worries me so much - she was literally clue and listless. They had her taken to the hospital late this evening and given oxygen and other medication that seemed to help, but the cardiologists do not believe she will make the flight home. They are definitely on my mind and I feel guilty about how well and how smoothly things have gone for us.

Ying cried herself to sleep on my shoulder the 1st night. She was grieving, sounding as if her little heart was breaking. I'm sure she was missing her family and friends. I'm glad she was upset in a way, I would have been more worried if she had not shown any signs of grief. I am certain that there were a few Chinese people crying their eyes out and missing her as well. =( Once she was done crying, she slept very well. I said a lot of thankful prayers as I was falling asleep. We really, truly could not have asked for a better day, I don't think I could have imagined a better outcome for this day.

Today we woke up and took all the kids out to do paperwork. Ying is the cutest little thing, and she is such a girl compared to her big brother! She seems to be very little delayed mentally – other than the speech issue. She understands everything it seems. She's adorable when she nods her head yes if you ask her something that she wants. She points quite well too, I don't think it will take her long to catch up in English and in speaking, and also physically. She really was very well cared for! She knows many of her body parts (in Chinese) and likes to play little games. She's just plain adorable. She was very good while we did paperwork too, much more sedate than Matt. We'll see if that lasts. Our first stop was back at the same place we picked the kids up from yesterday… which – if I were one of the older kids- would have been really scary to me! One of the families had Yisha explain to their little girl (who is 9) that we were going back, but just to do paperwork- they weren't giving her back or anything like that. We actually had a little ceremony with the new director of the place – which was an honor to us. Lily and Josh (the founders of CCAI- our adoption agency) paid us a visit as well – also a rare occurrence. This is the largest group to adopt from Henan since they started the Henan project and everything is going wonderfully. Lily went with us to the ceremony with the new director. Josh stayed behind to help the family with the tet baby who was in the hospital. Really, they couldn't have had a better advocate, it is fortunate for them that he is here, even though they are in a terrible position.

We filled things out and got our certificate with our family picture on it, then went to fill our more paperwork. The notary office was really interesting and very Chinese. We had to trek up 8 flights of stairs, and through smoky hallways to get to the notary office. They smoke a lot in China, even in the workplace. After a minute or two, you get used to it. They took more pictures and had us fill out more papers. Then finally back to the bus to go to the hotel. Then back out for a shopping trip… to a store very similar to Wal-Mart (but not walmart, we went there the night before)… it was weird to have all the Chinese people staring and taking pictures with their camera phones. It was also weird wandering around the store trying to find the things you were looking for. Then back on the bus again… Ying started crying and fussing. It makes me happy to hear her do that (bad as that sounds). She was tired and thirsty. We gave her some water and snacks and she was good to go. She's very cute when she cries. She bucks, just like Matt does, and I had to laugh. I told her I had a 2.5 year old at home who was much bigger and probably 4 times stronger than her, so she could buck around all she wanted! It is weird how delicate and gentle-natured she is compared to Matthew. He's going to get such a kick out of playing with her I think. We saw the baby who was in the hospital back at the hotel, she looked much better and was moving around and stuff. That was encouraging. They were waiting for their cardiologist at home to review her files. I do not think they will end up being allowed to adopt her though, I don't know. It is such a scary situation for them and they could definitely use prayers. The baby is much worse then they thought she was. I think I say a prayer every few minutes I'm so thankful that things are going so well for us. YingYing was good in the restaurant for dinner, or was that lunch (yes, Chinese food again… we did eat Italian the night before we got her, but I wasn't hungry and didn't really eat any). We came back to the room and played and took nice steamy bath (she loves baths, just like GeGe!) and I was fully expecting another crying spell. She was fine though, we put her down and said good-night. She looked at books for a few minutes and went to sleep. She is afraid of the dark though, so we have to make sure we leave a light on. We will have to buy one for her room I think.

<span style="mso-spacerun: style="mso-spacerun: yes">I'll have Jason post more pictures when he wakes up and tells me where the cable is. =)

<br ZhengZhou in typical Chinese fashion of organized chaos. =) The flight was ok and short, which is good. ZhengZhou is much more 'Chinese' – there is hardly another non-Chinese person to be found that isn't with us. The city is quite large with lots of giant, interesting buildings. Strangely, the streets seem a tiny bit safer to cross. It is warmer here also, about 50 degrees- which is nice. Our agency guide here, Yisha, reminds me of Lao Shi- I like her a lot.

We got to our room at the Crowne Plaza and it was a thousand degrees!!! The 'cool' button on the thermostat doesn't actually blow cool. The air conditioning is not on. We all were burning up. Yisha spoke to the hotel people about it. The heating/cooling system is either one or the other- and it powers 4 different buildings (3 of them hotels) on this block, so they could not just turn on the air for us. They did let us know how to crack the windows and provided us with fans to cool the rooms- that helped tremendously!

We went to the bank and waited and waited. We would have been the perfect target for robbery- so conspicuous we all were. 20 or so white people walking into the currency exchange. I was very vigilant when the guard went to the bathroom, but I'm always watchful like that (I prefer careful to paranoid). Of course nothing. They even had Tom & Jerry playing in the lobby for entertainment! They call it Mao he Lao Shu (Cat & Mouse).

We came back and then a few of us trekked it down the block to Chinese Wal-Mart (about 2 blocks down). I have a feeling we are going to spend more time there once we get the babies. It was highly entertaining and very, very Chinese. The meat was all out on stands where you could go though and pick the piece you wanted after handling it (with gloves of course). We were stared at so very much, it was interesting. We are all curious as to why the sidewalks seem to be constantly wet even though there is no rain.

We came back, put some stuff away in the room, wrapped gifts and sorted money into their needed piles. That took a while. Jason called back home and it was torturous to hear Matt's voice. He is doing fine however and doesn't miss us a bit. The dogs too. Not really surprising.

Tomorrow is the day! Wish us luck everyone, send all the good thoughts and prayers you can spare! We're so excited.

--
--"We never touch people so lightly that we do not leave a trace"

Days 1-4

Day 1 – Wednesday, November 18

Well, we made it to the airport on time and made it to Chicago in one piece – SCORE! Very glad Poppy was willing to take us at 4am. I managed to bash my head on the overhead compartment while disembarking… I immediately started laughing & then a tall guy made fun of me- he said ‘only us tall people are supposed to do that.’ I agreed. I am not used to watching my head. There are an abundance of military service men & women (particularly Navy) at O’Hare. Reading the story of O’Hare the war hero= it all makes me miss my Granddaddy very much. While we breakfasted at Chili’s- I watched a man walk over to a table of four soldiers, He thanked them for serving their (our) country, for everything they do, & he bought their meal. I got quite teary-eyed at that (actually a little now, just thinking about it), but am very thankful to have witnessed the display. We should never, ever forget what our military men and women do for us all- down to the smallest day to day sacrifices that we all take for granted. To all of you who serve (and your families, who give up so much) – thank you. You have my gratitude.

Oh, and O’Hare is the coolest airport… they have these really neat automatic toilet seat covers!!!! The plastic slides around and POW- clean seat! HA! They also have automatic hand sanitizers as you exit the restroom. O’Hare – A+ for cleanliness.

Day 2 – I think – Thursday, November 19

Ok, so the plane is BIG. A 777 – it had two seats, five seats in the middle, then two more seats on each row. Wow. Business class looked neat, the seats reclined and had a lot more room. I hear 1st class has massage chairs, but we weren’t even allowed a glimpse. Flight was LONG, and Beijing is cold, with some snow on ground. The good Lord really tested me on this flight. I have issues with personal boundaries. I don’t like people I don’t know in my space, much less touching me. I acknowledge that this is my issue, and that other people don’t necessarily have this problem, and I’ve been trying to get better about it. Also, I’d mentally prepared myself. Culturally, it is not strange to Asian people to be—what I would call all up in each other’s space. So, of course this Chinese guy was next to me on the plane. Caveat—on the other side of him was AN EMPTY SEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT, he was somehow touching me – if not sleeping on me- pretty much the entire 14 hour flight! I’ve never been so happy to get off an airplane in my life. Between him and the guy who was standing in front of Jason who might as well have been in his lap – I didn’t sleep more than 15 minutes. But, they did have good food, and there was entertainment. They had nifty little TV screens where you could watch the airplane’s progress or watch movies. It was nice to actually watch a movie- I can’t remember the last movie I watched without interruption- or heck even at all! I watched Up (twice), GI Joe (twice) and 2 hours worth of Disney channel sitcoms (at least three times)… also read some of the Kindle while listening to music (plane’s satellite radio) and played a bit of video games. I seriously can’t imagine if we had taken Matt on that flight though, he would have lost his mind and driven everyone crazy- being confined like that.

Getting to China was weird. I went to the potty as soon as we got off the plane- MISTAKE! Should have gone on the plane. It was one of the ‘squatting’ potties… common here in China for some odd reason. It consists of a porcelain hole in the ground. Literally. There is no sitting. I have never before in my life been jealous of a man’s ability to stand and pee. I can’t even fathom if I’d had to go #2. I did vow after that – I would be sticking to hotel bathrooms, so I’m rationing my liquids while we are out during the day. Ah, strategery.

Going through customs & immigration & the ‘health check’ was a little weird. They have these things that look like metal detectors that you walk through that check your temperature and people are staring at you (I assume looking for signs of illness). It was strangely quiet as you stand in line to go through each of these three stations. Also, so many of the workers have masks on, it’s weird.

Our stroller never showed up on the carousel… but if we had to not get something, I’m glad that was it. We found our CCAI guide Sindy- who is absolutely adorable and super nice. She got us up to speed on the plans, and tossed us on the bus. She had to go back in the airport to retrieve some more families.

The ride to the hotel should have been 45 minutes, but turned into nearly 2 hours. Traffic is insane and scary. Really scary, I can’t imagine driving here. Thank you, Mr bus driver for getting us all through that. Beijing looks neat at night with all the lights, buildings, and signs.

So, we finally got to the hotel… YAY. It is a very nice hotel, and smells Chinese to me. Heh. Jason managed to pop the circuit in our room, and we hadn't even been in the room for 5 minutes! Thank goodness he had seen a tiny flashlight, and I had read on the card how to call the front desk in the lobby. It was pitch dark and we had to call the hotel desk. I ended up sitting in the hallway holding the door open while we waited for help. Turns out, you can plug a regular adapter in to this one particular plug. We grabbed some food from the restaurant and that was about it. We were exhausted, so we crashed -- just after 9pm. =)

Day 3 – Friday, November 20, 2009

Jason woke up every two hours, and finally got up about about 4am. He looked at the computer a bit and then paced around and explored the hotel for a while. He said it was all dark, they had most of the lights off- very strange- and our hotel appears to be connected to a bunch of shopping and food if you keep walking around. The hotel is quite pretty, with a gorgeous fountain show casing the 12 animals of the zodiac. The staff is also quite nice. Breakfast buffet rocked- especially when you are hungry.

At 9am we were off to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Odd to think that in the not so distant history you would have been killed for entering the grounds of the Forbidden City without permission. On the walk from the bus there were the sounds of beautiful, absolutely lovely song-birds everywhere! It was astounding, and coming from the park we were walking beside. Well, look over and the birds are in cages in the trees… no wonder you can hear them so well!!!! That was quite funny, but weird, and maybe even a bit sad. Mostly funny though- like, really?! The street vendors attacked us as soon as we got off the bus- ‘buy my panda hat, buy some gloves’… If I hadn’t had cold-weather gear with me, I’d have been happy to buy it. It was really cold. Like- bitter, biting cold. The wind was Canada-style cold. I LOVED IT! I love cold. =) It reminded me of our ski trip to Canada. The Forbidden City was both beautiful and fascinating- especially the Imperial Gardens, with play places built for their children with rocks brought in from each of the provinces. Matt would have been really, really hard to keep off those rocks.

Lao Shi warned us of this, but I was still surprised when it happened. Chinese people stop me and ask to take a picture with me – because of the blonde hair. She said many Chinese have never seen a blonde in person before. I’m thankful we didn’t bring Matt with us- we would have been stopped every 5 feet with his white-blonde hair. I felt like everyone was looking at me though, and I did a couple of times catch the words ‘bai tou’, or ‘bai tou fa’ – white head, white hair. The Chinese guards in their outfits are fascinating – they look so foreign and handsome and severe… especially the ones with bayonets. The picture of Mao is GIGANTIC.

Tiananmen Square is large, well protected, and excruciatingly clean. There are street vendors, but much fewer of them. There are beautiful pillars- 56 of them that represent the 56 different ethnic groups that make up the different minorities within China. It is wide, and there isn’t much in the middle. Supposedly, the largest city center in the world. They are working on a museum on one side that will give history and information on all the ethnic groups. At the end is Mao’s mausoleum. We walked past, but did not go in because the line to get in was over 2.5 hours long. Then we went down stairs, through tunnels, up stairs, cross street, down stairs, tunnel, up stairs- etc, etc, etc to get back to the bus that really seemed to be just right across the street. It was weird to walk through the tunnels that go under the street (good idea though) and see the beggars and vendors and soldiers all milling together.

Apparently you drive wherever you want, whenever you want in Beijing. Our bus driver is good at it. The bus pulled up on the sidewalk to let us out for lunch. We ate lunch in an underground restaurant that was pretty good. I didn’t eat much- the sauces are very strong, but very Chinese. Also, I’m paranoid about what I’m eating because of the seafood allergy. Thank goodness for sticky white rice!

We went through a silk factory, which was really pretty interesting. I totally want a silk blanket now, I think I will look for one in GuangZhou. We had some extra time, so we got to drive to the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium. That was pretty darn cool! Also, the buildings shaped like a dragon were so cool! I was glad we got to take that little detour.

On we went to the acrobatic show and the Beijing Theater. Jason was not excited, things like that don’t interest him too much, though he was excited to think they would do some wushu. The performance was interesting- especially when Jason got picked to go up on the stage!!!! HA! It was hilarious! It was part of the show where they put someone into a gigantic ceramic flower pot and a tiny girl spins the pot around on her legs. It was so funny that he was picked to participate. I’ll post a picture when I get it- the guy next to us who had a great camera that didn’t flash was able to get a picture for me!!! Tooooooo funny. The wushu part of the performance was also great… the monkey style guy was amazing and a little boy did Frog style, which was really cool- I’d never seen it before.

So, off to dinner we went. We had Peking roast duck in a very authentic, local place. It was good, but duck is not really my thing. It is a little fatty for me. The sauces were all very strong too, so I had a little rice and that was about it. I figured I would get something back at the hotel. But, when we got back I was too tired to worry about it, I just went to sleep instead. There’s always breakfast.

Day 4 – Saturday, November 21, 2009

So, we got on the bus to head to the Great Wall… we were on the bus for a long time. Our bus driver is the best. He drives where he wants, when he wants. I think this is the first time I’ve seen a bus do a U-Turn- he does them all the time. So, we drove and drove- the traffic was very bad and congested, and there were several accidents. Finally, Sindy let us know that there was a very bad accident, and they had gotten notice that they had closed the road to the Great Wall. So, by that time it was nearly lunchtime anyway. We went to the Jade factory as planned. That was pretty cool. They use a tiny dremel looking tool to carve the jade under running water. Some of the carvings were just amazing in their detail. Then we went to lunch- where they gave us small bottles of unidentifiable alcohol that no one drank… so we took a couple to bring home- heh heh. Li lao shi (Nai Nai) & Jiang lao shi (Ye Ye) will get a kick out of them if nothing else. And, on to the Great Wall we went, since the road was now open. Thankfully, it was not quite as cold as yesterday and the wind wasn’t really blowing at all- so it was quite a pleasant temperature for this type of undertaking. Other than 5 year old Katy- I went the highest on the wall out of the women. To be fair, I’m pretty sure most of the others had done this before, and I think Nancy would have totally gone farther than me if she wasn’t six months pregnant! I think we would have gone a little farther to where it ended but we ran out of time. We did make it to the store at the top, where we opted not to buy t-shirts that said I climbed the Great Wall of China. The wall is pretty darn amazing. I wouldn’t have invaded China if I had to climb that to do so!! The steps were terribly, awfully uneven. Some were only about an inch high- while others came up to my knee. There was no rhyme or reason or rhythm to it either. Also, one side of the seemingly never-ending steps was still covered in snow and ice, so it was hard to navigate up and down. After having gone both up and down- I’m voting that down was more treacherous. It was scary! Thank goodness they’d put in a handrail at some point in time or I would have been scooting down some of those steps on my butt! We then drove back into Beijing- seeing some really interesting roadside scenes along the way. We skipped the tea ceremony due to lack of time and went for the HuTong tour instead. HuTong’s are like small square village housing that is very, very old. We rode a rickshaw (which was neat, I didn’t think I’d like it) and our driver was highly entertained that the MeiGuoRen (Americans) spoke Mandarin. We went to the house of the gentleman who owned the HuTong and got to listen to a lot of interesting history. We drove around some more and saw Beijing’s version of Beale Street- which was pretty neat. I was frozen by this time! I’d gotten sweaty climbing the darn wall and then I’d gotten cold on the bus. When the sun went down it got really cold really quickly. I ate dinner with all my gear on and still never got warm. The food here is killing me. You can only eat Chinese food so many times in a row- ha ha. Also, because of the seafood allergy, I’m extremely careful of what I’m eating. So, I’m ending up eating only about a palm size amount of food per meal. Maybe I’ll lose a few pounds, eh?

We’ re now packing for the trip to ZhengZhou in the morning. I can’t wait to go. Beijing has been great, and we’ve gotten to do some amazing things… but the entire time we have been here all I can think is- I want to go get my baby girl. So, we’re more than ready for the trip tomorrow. Then the next day we finally get to see her!

Ok, I’m off to re-pack and weigh bags!

~Robyn (&Jason)

ps, here is our flickr page of photos, we just dumped them here, not organized or tagged yet, :)

PicsPages

Packed

The cameras are packed or I would take pics of our luggage. We did good, only checking 3 bags. Our flight is at 6am tomorrow, so we have to get up early. We fly into Chicago, have a 5 hour-ish layover, and then hop on the plane to Beijing. There are a couple of other families that will be on the same flight, so hopefully we can identify each other and chat a bit. The flight from Chicago is about 14-15 hours. We logged in to do the online check-in and got upgrade options for the seats, which we took. Economy upgrades to Economy Plus, woooooooooo. Actually it gives us more leg room, so that will be nice. We should get to Beijing about 4:30pm local time, and then we find our guide and go to the hotel. I have my proxify account setup, so I should be able to by-pass the "Great Firewall of China" and post to the blog and get everywhere else when we get settled in. The worst part of all this is we had to leave the baby-boy at home with the grandparents. Its very depressing, but we will be plenty busy within the next day or so, and we get girlie-girl on 11/23. We just want to get there and see that she is ok, and there are no additional issues. We have skype and webcams setup so we can talk to the son here, and show off the new kid. Ok, its late, we're going to go take a nap now so we can get up and get ready in a few hours.

TA and CA confirmed

Finally, we are done with waiting for all these "A"'s to come. We got our confirmation on the travel dates of November 19th - Dec 4th, and our consulate appointment is on Dec 1st. We got our plane tickets purchased yesterday, so we will leave Memphis in less than 2 weeks to head to Chicago to sit for 5 hours, THEN we head to Beijing, thats ~14 hours in the same plane, booooo. We should land in Beijing around 4:30pm local time. Hopefully we can stay awake and successfully go to sleep in the evening to get over the jet lag. The following 2 days will be spent doing a Beijing tour, then we fly to Zhengzhou. We have no idea what we will be doing there, or how long we will be there, or when we get the baby. The agency will be giving us a more detailed 'inter-China' itinerary in a few days. We have to be in Guangzhou on Dec. 1st to do the swearing in ceremony, and then we can leave on Dec. 4th to head home. I logged into some of my forums that I follow to see if anyone had been getting TA's, RQ has got to be the best bet when it comes to telling if anything is happening. Unfortunately nobody in the forums had heard anything about TA, that means no agency has gotten anything, which means that CCAA hasn't sent ANYTHING, booooooooooooooooooooo. Late this week we heard that the CCAA Director had stepped down and a new person was taking over, and this is why we haven't seen any TA dates. We got back into town on Thursday the 29th, and still the same news, nobody has seen any TA info, just rumors that we will get them 'next week'.

Friday at work my phone rings and its the area code my agency is in, so my heart rate shoots up, and it is my agency's travel dept. She asks me several generic questions, and asks about our visas, and if we sent in all the paperwork to them and if we had checked on flight prices. At this point I just had to stop and ask if we were going to China or what, but she just kept moving through the questions. Finally she says they don't have any TA packaged=s, but they are long overdue, and were told to expect them next week. They are trying to basically make sure everyone they believe to in that TA package is ready to go and won't need to get together any last minute documents. She said they have 2 dates set in mind, but they are just estimates based on what they get next week and if they can get Consulate appointments. Nov 18 - Dec 4 with a CA on Dec 1, and Nov 25 - Dec 11, with a CA on Dec 8. Of course she said these are just best guesses and not to make any flight arrangements, but she recommended getting quotes and itineraries setup so we can get an idea of what to expect. So hopefully next week I will have something exciting to post, :)

The last step!

Well, our Article 5 document was signed, and has been sent to the CCAA. They will give us our travel appointment. This is the LAST thing we wait for in the process. The next thing we hear should be when we actually get to leave. The holiday in China starts on Thursday and run through to the next Thursday. So an entire week will be blocked out that nobody will be processing dates. So basically we could get some info between Sunday and Wednesday, but its not very likely, the average wait for a TA is 2-4 weeks. We will anxiously wait out the next few days to make sure something miraculous doesn't happen, and then we have a week off of obsessing and wondering about "When?". It took us right about 16 days to get the Article 5 signed, which is good, the average is 2-4 weeks. We have a "Toddler Shower" on Oct. 3rd, and then head to Disney World from Oct 22-29, so our month will be busy enough that we should not go completely insane.

Cyber Stalking

I've started the stalking process of the Guangzhou Consulate. I waited just over a week for the cabled file to be there. Our other paperwork is already there as well, per the agency anyways. So now I'm asking about the status, which they will likely tell me they can't give out. I've seen other people say that if they are persistent that they will give them the status, I can do that, :P Also, I've started to get a little nervous. The agency said the Article 5 document takes about 2-4 weeks, but I have seen some people getting them turned around in as few as 5 days, WOW. Given the quick nature of all our previous steps we think we will get Article 5 fast. That would put us into "Your going to China within 1-5 weeks" mode. The averages put us going in November, but the JnJ averages could have us there in October depending on a multitude of things we have no control over.

ALSO, we did get pictures back of the Birthday Party! Ann over at Red Thread got some pics of the cake and the party, we were very excited!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/Sq76d7H2GWI/AAAAAAAAAww/3onbhBAP1-E/s320/7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381513996748069218" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/Sq76pOkmIDI/AAAAAAAAAw4/KKtJGG2u-KQ/s320/9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381514190947491890" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/Sq76wJGt8dI/AAAAAAAAAxA/2Hs7WthWVNQ/s320/21.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381514309739082194" />

Really nice cake, and everyone seems to be having fun. I highly recommend using Red Thread, Ann has been exceptionally helpful, and almost always gets us pictures. She has sent us several pics, and measurements for Mei-Mei 2 or 3 times now. One more step down, just a couple left now! I believe what we wait for next is to have our Article 5 document signed. THEN we get to wait for our TA(Travel Arrangements) which is when we actually get to leave. I talked with our agency last week, and asked about travel. Our fingerprints expire 1/31/10, so I wanted to make sure we didn't need to look into renewing them. The agency rep assured me that unless something "crazy" happened we wouldn't need to do that, and we should get our TA dates sometime in late October or early November. I'll give the NVC a day or two, and then I'm going to start emailing the consulate for updates, :)

Happy Birthday Mei Mei!!!

So, yesterday was our xiao Ying's birthday - she is officially 2 years old! Our Visa applications and passports are in the Fedex envelope now ready to be sent off. We are using a courier service, Dependable Adoption Courier Service, to expedite the visa process. They should be done this week, or early next week, no hurry really, we aren't leaving for a few weeks at earliest. I also got our agency specific paperwork together and have signed and stamped it all. Lastly, we filled out the baby's Visa application to come here. Government forms are borderline insane, especially immigration related forms. There are so many questions, and sooooooooooooo much room for error, they seem designed to make sure you miss a field or mark something incorrectly. I think we are done with all the boring paperwork now, we hope so anyways. We have a few little benchmark dates to hit, but its mainly following the paperwork flow as it goes from agency to agency and gets approved.

We also got a note from our courier service in China! Ann at Red Thread has delivered 3 packages for us, she does an excellent job and we are impressed each time. The last thing we sent off was a "birthday package", cake, some toys, little things like that. We were hoping to get some pictures at the end of the month, after her actual birthday. Many other people get these little birthday party pictures when they send a cake. Some orphanages are strict and won't send anything but pictures of the cake, to basically show that they bought one. Some places take video and pictures of the party/event. We got 2 new pics today, I kind of hate them, :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/SonHEdT0W2I/AAAAAAAAAwI/kUMEkFQnTFA/s320/dang+ying1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371042910017182562" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/SonHOyqIJNI/AAAAAAAAAwQ/IqtVJM-V0yI/s320/dang+ying2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371043087546590418" />

I can't stand the haircut. I've seen it before, and I always think its strange. Its definitely a Chinese "thing", some of the parents I've talked with say they do it because it will make the hair grow in better/thicker. The agency said it would be here today, but they didn't give me the tracking number. If its not here by lunch I will probably login to work and look at the system and find out where it is myself, the few privileges of working for the company. After all the paperwork, we thought we were pretty much done, but now I get these "Travel packets" and I see that we have lots of paperwork to do again. It seems to mostly be easy stuff, print and sign this form type papers and get them notarized. That we can handle, still, just a bunch of little things that we might miss or forget. Hopefully I will have the LOA and the I800 stuff sent off today, and CCAI will get it all tomorrow. I'd like to get all the other papers signed and sent off to them as well, but I'm not sure that we will have time. Most of the additional paperwork does not appear to be as time sensitive, says we have "5-7 days to complete". That will keep us busy for the rest of the week, but after that we will be back to "waiting", which each stage puts us closer to Mei-mei, and each stage we feel sicker/more excited than the previous stage. The agency has said 9-12 weeks to travel. 9 weeks out would be ~October 13th, and 12 weeks would be ~November 3rd-ish. The problem with October is they have some events that go on, where the Consulate is closed. Oct 1-5 is the Autumn Festival, and then Columbus day is the 12th, and at the end of the month there is a HUGE trade show, the China Mining and Coal Expo to be exact, who would want to miss that, its huge. The trade show is at the end of the month, and apparently agencies don't like to schedule things during that timeframe because of prices going up for everything. So, its kind of a toss up, even if our paperwork is done really quickly, we may not have a slot to fall into for October, at this point we are shooting for early November. We will be in Disney Oct 22-29, so that should be a good way to spend the last few days/weeks with the baby boy before we head off toe China. Well, the Fedex guy just dropped off the LOA, I'm going to open this thing and see what the big deal is, :)

We got LOA!!!

Wow, we got our LOA email today, and it will be at the house via Fedex tomorrow!!!!! We can't believe it, we are super excited. I was telling the wife this morning while driving in that I was going to stop obsessing on the LOA and just decide that we will be traveling in Nov/Dec. I was going to cut back on the OCD ritual of all my adoption forums and sites to try and be less anxious and stressed out about this. 63 days from our LOI is amazing, they average LOA is "2-5 months", so we are 2 months and 3 days into it, basically as fast as we could have expected to get it. Now I'm going to go throw-up, :)

2nd care package and getting anxious!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 235px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/Sm-rA3__qwI/AAAAAAAAAvo/jsUdssjLCn0/s320/dang+ying.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363693712742263554" />

We sent off our 2nd care package last week. Its packed with all the pictures Ying will need! Everyone this kid will meet is in our little book. A few other little toys/lovey items as well. With the help of our Nai-Nai(our official Chinese Grandmother)the wife wrote a nice letter in Mandarin/Pinyin for the foster group. Man is it expensive to send from the US to China. The post office was 55 bucks to ship, no tracking, and 2-3 weeks to get there on average. So much for 'NEW flat rate boxes'. We figured it would be quicker to Fedex it, but they don't have delivery service in Henan. We ended up fedex'ing it to Ann at Red Thread and having her send it via express mail, that should get it to her in about a week, and at least we know it got to China. We've heard some people mailing packages off and having them basically disappear as far as they know, because the child doesn't have any of the items, and they have no pictures or evidence they were ever received.

We are now into the 50-ish days waiting. This is not very long honestly. It has actually flown by for us, BUT we have entered into a window that we could start seeing the LOA. 70-90 days seem to be a fairly popular number for "days waiting for LOA", but they start to come in around the 50s for some folks. So now I'm becoming obsessive with checking the adoption forums to see if others are getting LOA yet. Very few have come in these last 2 weeks. I'm not sure if thats good or not, maybe that means a big wave will roll through this week or next. I am extremely jealous when I see people getting LOA, and start looking up their LID/LOI/PA stats to see how we compare. August is going to be slow I feel, nothing but summer and doing things around the house. Vacations start in September, and another in October, so we will have 2 months worth of back-to-back "things to look forward to".

We have a Mandarin class every Friday. It used to be a little more intense before the baby, but since we started taking a kid it turns into half class and half Nai-Nai/Matt playing. The 2 year old has good tone, and knows a decent number of words, mainly the ones we force upon him, "please", "jump", "open". We learned alot of baby words when we were pregnant(she was pregnant, I was just nervous). We have several sheets worth of words and phrases we used/planned to use with him. Its just now hitting us that a 2 year old Chinese child will have a pretty decent vocabulary, so now we are trying to get together a list of the basics to review, hoping to make the transition, and the language barrier, much much easier. We don't foresee too many problems, we have the eat/sleep/hurt/potty stuff down, it will be the odd things that catch us. Well, thats all for now, hope to post more soon!

Nothing new

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 269px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/SlddLqYREUI/AAAAAAAAAvI/ICv650NU9w0/s320/dang+yingpkg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356852736716509506" />

Here is a pic of the care package that we sent a couple weeks ago. It was delivered 6/24, pretty nice little package. We used Red Thread, Ann, the lady who sent the package, was very helpful. We got a nice little generic letter put in as well. We may use the service again, but the wife has put together a package of our own that we will mail this weekend. Ann at Red Thread said that she found out little girl is in Beijing now, and is no longer in Henan, which is good, because we couldn't Fedex anything to her there as they don't service the particular area. I thought maybe it would be easy to get the updated mailing address from someone as opposed to having it sent to the Henan address and them sending it to the Beijing address, but that is not the case. I guess they don't want you to have any direct contact with the orphanage or foster home, and I can see why, I'm sure some people wouldn't be far from calling or showing up to see their kid, heh. So with all that said, we have to USPS it to her, which is fine, I'll support the Postal Service, my dad and sister work there, and they do business with Fedex. The wife has put together a nice package to send over, she even wrote<typed, same thing> out a letter, in actual Mandarin, giving some more detailed info on us and how we can't wait etc etc. She put together two good sized photo flip books too with Mandarin/pinyin/English translated captions of all the people, looks very good.

We have also started to actually prepare for her arrival. We bought a double stroller this week. We are picking colors, and themes, which is apparently looking like a Disney princess "Happily ever after" theme, seems appropriate. My mom, aunt, and wife are excited about the decorating aspect of it. Several family and friends had asked about a baby shower, and after some back and forth we decided that we will have one before we go get her, that way we can get some cute clothes/toys and be ready when she gets here. We still need to look at 2 more car seats, an additional one for each car. Thanks goodness for craigslist and freecycle sites!

2 year old Matt has officially switched over to calling the "extra room" the "mei mei's room"<"mei mei" is little sister in Chinese>, as well as some of the toys that the wife has pulled out, he refers to as "mei mei's toys", which he wants to take out of the bags/boxes and play with. This weekend we are going to start disassembling mei mei's room to empty it out and get it ready to clean and paint. Its currently a fake bedroom with a bed, chair, and tv that nobody ever uses. Might as well go ahead and empty all that out and prep it for its now intended use.

We have been waiting for about 1 month now, REALLY waiting anyways. Average is 90 days, so we hope to see something in a couple of months. Hopefully sooner, but not likely.

Insane

Our social worker called today apologizing that she hadn't sent us the homestudy addendum we needed 2.5 weeks ago. We were not worried about getting it real quick, we figured she would have it to us by the time we would be ready to travel. We also sent a care package to the baby/orphanage. We used a service in China, www.redthredchina.com , the lady that runs it, Ann, was very helpful. She did call and get us some updated sizes, and pics! Unfortunately the pics were the same ones we already had, :( The care package included a disposable camera, so I'm hoping we will get some new pics anyways. We have no idea if they will use the camera, and if they do, if they will send it to us, or if they will just give it to us when we get there.

Sooooo now we are still waiting. We have a trip to St. Louis in July, and a trip to Atlanta in September<Dragon-Con, weeeeeeee>, and then Disney World in October. And somewhere in there, hopefully before November, we will be going to China. We're hoping the China trip doesn't overlap any of these other trips, but if our agency calls and tells us a date, we are going!

Waiting is no fun

We sent a care package to the baby and foster home a few days ago. We are hoping to get some more updated photos and information on her, mainly sizes, so we can buy some clothes.

Also, our home study update, should have been done last week, but our social worker "lost it". Now, usually I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but every single thing our social worker has had to do, gets messed up. She lost the initial home study and had to re-interview us. Then we needed it updated due to a typo, one sentence was wrong. That took 2 months. So even though I typed out the new update, and all she had to do was print it and sign it, making it as easy as possible for her, she still screwed that up. SO, if you want to know the name of a service/social worker in the area that is really knowledgeable and nice, but extremely slow and forgetful, let me know, I can get you her info, :(

We are also still working on a name for the kid, not sure how that is going to go yet. We are fairly certain we will keep the "Ying" portion as her middle name, but no idea on the first name as of yet. We just got the email today that the CCAA(China Gov for adoption stuff) pre-approved our letter of intent. Usually this takes 1-4 weeks, so we are surprised that we got it in 2 days! Here are a couple pics of Dang Ying!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/SjElDUI8CyI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/mKVWGbAlRIc/s320/Dang+Ying+1+5.26.09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5346094971541523234" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0RF1ns1b8/SjElDQFPPTI/AAAAAAAAAtI/-rHRzfoKOco/s320/Dang++Ying+5.26.09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5346094970452262194" />

A little bit of info since we can legally give it out. She was born 8/30/07, so she is about 5 months younger than Matt. She is in the Henan Province in a Pingdingshan Orphanage, actually its a foster home. She is "special needs", she has cleft lip/palate, ToF/Tetralogy of Fallot(Heart disease), and a floating kidney. The cleft lip has been repaired, and we think maybe partially the palate, but she may need another surgery, we will just have to check. The heart issue has also been surgically corrected. As for the floating kidney, apparently thats not a big deal, most people don't even know that they have it unless they experience some kind of pain from it. No surgery or treatment required for it unless it bothers her. We reviewed her medical profile with 3 doctors, and they all seemed to say the same things, and weren't overly concerned with most of the issues she had. So now, we are back to the awful process of waiting. The agency said even though all our other approvals have gone through so quickly, that the next step likely won't, and will be about 4-5 months before we are set to travel.

Updates

Ok, first, since I have had a few people ask, "jnj adoption adventure", jnj stands for Jason and Jamaica. The wifey's first name is Jamaica, yes, like the country, :)

We have all our paperwork done again. We submitted the letter of intent(LOI) Monday, and it was translated and sent off to the CCAA Tuesday, so now we get to wait for the ever elusive PA. Could be 5 days, could be 35 days, I love how broad a window all the steps can be. We also confirmed our immigration status, to make sure that it lists that we are approved for a "special needs child", which it does. And lastly, *I* type up the home study addendum and sent it to the social worker. CCAI provides a basic template where you just drop in names and dates and what-not. So HOPEFULLY we will get the home study addendum back this week, all she needs to do is print it and stamp it, but historically our SW has taken lengthy periods of time to get things done. After we get the home study back, thats it, we are back to hurry up and wait status. Only NOW the whole "waiting" process sucks 10x more, because now we have a baby over there, with a name, and a face.

We are fully aware of the "averages" associated with the next few steps. Basically 4-6 months is what we were told from now until we travel. BUT, given the fact that we have greatly blown out most of the previous "average" numbers, we're hoping to get her before she turns 2, August 30th. Thats about 2.5 months away, and fairly unreasonable, but we can still hope! I've seen other people get LOA/TA in 2 months, so I know its a possibilty, :)

Since the referral came about 6 months before we had anticipated it, at the earliest, we are now faced with a few things we need to get done. A bed, DAH! I just took the baby's bed apart last month so he could sleep in his big-boy bed. Now I need to reassemble it and buy another mattress for it. Clothes, I've been batting away all the girl clothes wife looks at when we go out, saying "We don't have any idea how old/big she will be, just wait, we have a few months!" HA! That kind of backfired on me, so now we get to spend twice as long in the clothing sections looking at 2yo boys clothes, and 2yo girls clothes, grrrrrreat! Also we need to get the room arrangements setup. We are still debating on how thats going to go. Since they will be "virtual twins" we are thinking about putting their beds in the same room to let them sleep together. It will def help the bonding process, and may help ease the transition for the two of them. Then we could setup the other room as a pure playroom. We're going to do some research on that though to see what other people have experienced. We will probably need to get another stroller, or a dual stroller now too, and maybe another chest of drawers for clothes. Other than that I think we have everything else, purely because we already have a 2 year old. Now the wife's girl friends, that have been asking, can finally setup a baby shower and dump clothes on us, lol.

Lastly, yes, we have pictures of her, but we aren't supposed to post them publicly until we get PA, so as soon as we get PA, there will be pics!

Referral!

We have a referral! Whats that mean? Well, it means that we reviewed a child's profile, and made visits to several Doctors for some consultation. After reviewing the precious little girl and talking it over with the family we called and told the agency YES! Her name is Dang Ying, she was born(a guess on the orphanages side) August 30, 2007. The bio-kid and the new little one will be about 5 months apart in age, yes, two 2 year olds in the same house. Mommy and daddy may need to start buying box-wine, :) She is currently in Henan province in Pingding Shan City, China. We have a little more paperwork to do now, but we are sooooooo close now(hopefully 4-5 months). I will post some more info later, but had to post SOMETHING to mark the occasion.

We're Pregnant!

Well, we are officially adoption paper pregnant! We got our LID date on 4/10/09, 2 days after it was delivered to the CCAA. Pretty quick actually, we are excited, this means we are now logged into the system in China. We also completed our medical conditions checklist over the weekend and faxed it in on 4/13/09. That means we are also in the special needs program as well. Our agency, like most, will allow you to be in the NSN(Non-Special Needs) and the SN(Special Needs) program simultaneously. Most likely we will be matched with a SN child way way WAY before a NSN. Currently the wave of people that are being matched for NSN children have a March 2006 LID. So even if it were still moving at the same pace since 06, we would still be 2012 before a match. The SN program averages 12-18 months. If you want a little boy the match can be even faster, I've seen people with matches 10 days from their LID date, insane. Per our agency, the most common SN request is a little girl, 0-24 months, with a minor heart problem, (ie, heart murmur, small hole, etc) basically things that don't require surgery or can clear up on their own as the child gets older. The major SN that the agency gets is children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate. Many times the child has already had surgery to repair the cleft lip/palate. So we are thinking we should have a match in about 6 months, as that seems to be the average from what I've been seeing in forums.

Almost Pregnant

Our packet has been delivered to the adoption agency in China as of yesterday! We had a few set backs. Somehow wifeys physical forms didn't get the HIV and Hepatitis sections checked off, but everybody and their brother signed off on it. We had the origianl forms with her results, so that was easy. My letter of employment verification lapsed the 1 year mark and I had to get it renewed. We also seemed to have missed a signature on our financial statement from the wife, and I also had to get a letter from my doctor for my inhaler. All easy junk, didn't have to get anything notarized for that, just re-re-verifications I guess. More waiting, supposed to be done and shipped to China next week, we will see, :)

No more paperwork

We got our documents last week from DC and everything looked great. We went to Fedex Office(ITS NOT KINKOS ANY MORE!!) and made photocopies of all the documents. Got all our "family and friends" photos done, and wrote a check and sent it all to the adoption agency in Atlanta, GA. Basically they proof the photocopies several times, then send the packet to Colorado, thats the agency's headquarters, and then translate and bind the packet to ship. The agency got the packet on Tuesday, and this process takes 9-11 business days. So now we are waiting for word that they are done and shipping to China. This is good news mainly because it means we have no more paperwork to do, NONE!! Now we just sit and wait, and wait.

We need to email our "special needs medical checklist" off to the agency to get us in the special needs program, but thats super easy. The agency has a very thorough list of conditions on the list and you have a yes/no/maybe option to choose from. We have a doctor appt next week for the baby, so we will probably ask the doctor some questions about some of the things on the list we aren't sure about. We have seen stories from agencies that match families and kids in the special needs program very quickly, ie less than 6 months. We aren't thinking that is going to happen, mainly because many people have opted to go special needs within the last year due to the extremely high wait times for a 'healthy' baby. I will post more info when we get it.

Chinese Embassy YAY!!!

Well, the courier service that I used for the last step of our domestic journey called today. The Chinese Embassy approved all our docs and we will have them back tomorrow!!!! We are very excited! This means we do not have to get new physicals or any other paperwork done, thats it!

Now we just ship the packet to the adoption agency with our passport photos, some family photos, and the next agency fee. They will review the documents and make sure they are all in order, and then bind them in a nice little portfolio and send them off to China. We basically have a few events after that, the next one being after it gets to China, which is called the "LID", the log in date, which just confirms that it is officially in China and in the line to get a child. This is the point where we just sit and literally wait for an undefined amount of time.

A side note here. I forgot to attach the actual application form for the Chinese Embassy that explained what the paperwork was, and who it was from etc etc. Well, I panicked and called the courier service back and the lady said that she noticed it was missing and filled one out for us, WOW! I literally told her "I love you" on the phone. Afterwards I went to Edible Arrangements and sent her a box of chocolate covered strawberries from us saying thanks. She called me back about an hour and a half later to thank me for them, lol. Edible Arrangements works FAST to get them delivered within an hour. If anyone is looking for a GREAT courier service in DC to do this, the website is and they were fantastic. Now we are just waiting for the docs to arrive tomorrow so we can put the rest of the things in and FedEx it off on Saturday to the agency.

TN is Amazing

Well, our documents got sent off last week on Wednesday and arrived on Thursday in Nashville. To my surprise Friday morning the FedEx man delivered them back to use, signed/sealed. They weren't even in Nashville a full 24 hours, INCREDIBLE! I want to send that office flowers.

After this, we got everything together, and got a hold of "Caring Hands", which is a service in DC that will take the documents in person to the state dept and then the Chinese embassy. The state dept will process the papers the same day, actually the courier service said they are only open from 07:30-11:30AM, and they stamp them all right there. Afterwards the courier will run them over to the Chinese embassy and drop them off. The embassy takes 4 days, unless you pay more(40 bucks a document!), and will hopefully give us the packet back with a green light. This should be done by Thursday, but maybe Friday depending on whether or not the courier service gets the package started today. So hopefully we will know where they are by the end of the week as far as any documents that need to be corrected and re-submitted. Fortunately if there is a problem with any of the paperwork and it needs to be done again we only have to resubmit that particular document as opposed to the entire packet. Just wanted to make this entry to basically mark the event, hopefully we will have another note put here with an update on the DC paperwork.

Shipping Out(Docs)

Well, we got the main paperwork shipped off today! Fedex Tracking # 797348613733 . I love the little Fedex Tracking thing we have now, it reminds me of the Dominos Pizza Tracker they have when you order online.

Anyways, I drove to downtown Memphis yesterday to get the Shelby county documents certified by the county clerk. I was worried this would take a while, but surprisingly enough I was only in the office maybe 15 minutes total. Me and a friend went on lunch and got in and out fairly quickly, making me regret the 1 hour of parking time I paid for in one of the lots.

I called before going out to the Fayette county clerk's office, which is good because she was not in yesterday. 2 days in a row(Fri and Tues) that she "wasnt in" but thats ok, she was there today and we got the documents done. I had already printed the Fedex labels at work for the shipment to Nashville and the return label to us, so everything minus some hot paper clip action was done. We made out a check for 26 bucks to the Tennessee Sec of State, $2.00 a document, and put it all in the Fedex envelope and dropped it off at the station.

I had already done this step for the birth and marriage licenses March 2008, I need to get these docs back and in DC before the middle of March so they don't go over the 12-month mark. Alot of the pre-prep-paperwork that I was told I could do was somewhat ruined by the length of time it took to get our homestudy and then the addendum done. The addendum alone took almost 2 months. We honestly don't even care about the time, we know we will be waiting enough in general, but because some people took so long to get their parts done we may lapse on some of our paperwork and need to get it re-done.

Optimistic me hopes we will get the packet back Friday, thats them getting the packet tomorrow, stamping it all, and then shipping it back tomorrow, so it is possible. We actually got the birth/marriage certificates back in less than a week. More than likely we will get the packet next week. After that we are going to turn it over to a specialized agency in DC that runs the paperwork to the US State Dept and then to the Chinese Embassy. Its supposed to be the quickest turn around time you can get, even vs. Fedex'n so I'll go that route. Its not too expensive, and if we have any problems from the embassy I'd like to know ASAP so I can get it corrected and re-submitted.

If all goes well with the Chinese Embassy my ulcer will probably completely disappear instantaneously and we start the process to get the FULL packet ready to send over to China. We have a few other puzzle pieces to put into the final "Dossier" as they call it, mainly some recent family photos and photocopies of our passports. After all that the agency reviews the packet and puts it in a nice binder and preps it for China, ie. correct page order, and translation into Chinese for some parts.

Authentication Process

The authentication process is the last step before we send our documents to China. In TN it kind of sucks because we have additional steps, but the basic flow of it is for us to package up our:

Adoption Petition(Hey, We want to adopt!)
Birth and Marriage Certificates
Employment Verifications
Financial Status Report
Physical Exams
Police Clearance Report
I-171H(The thing from the US Gov saying we can adopt)
Child Services Home Study

Then we need to get all these items notarized, and since we happen to have some things done in Fayette county where we live, and most other things in Shelby county, where we work, this is even worse. I have to get the things notarized in Shelby county certified by the Shelby county clerk, and then the same for the Fayette county side. After everything has been certified by county clerks, then we package it all together and send it to the Tennessee Secretary of State, to certify that the county clerks are indeed.....county clerks. There are obviously alot of notary/county clerk impersonators I was unaware of.

After the Sec of State certifies that, we send all of that paperwork to the US Department of State. I wish I had paid attention in that school trip we took to Nashville and I might actually know what some of these people do. The Dep of State certifies the state sealed docs are legit as the final check before we send it to:

The Chinese Consulate in D.C. for the final signature. This is the critical step. Up until now, nobody is actually looking at what is on the paperwork, just looking for the previous person's stamp. At the embassy they will be going over each document to check and make sure we have in fact met all the requirements for the adoption. This is where we may run into issues. We didn't update our bloodwork on our physicals to be less than 6 months old. Mainly because I hate needles, but also because insurance wouldn't pay for it, and the AIDS/Hep tests are kind of expensive. The physical itself has an updated date on it, and our adoption agency says that they have seen it go both ways where A: The embassy sends it back and says "Get this updated" or B: "Everything looks great, way to go Americans!" That is our main concern, but there are also all the other docs that could potentially be 'too old' or have typos, or missing a stamp, or even a wrinkled or smudged document. If anything is sent back, we will have to get it corrected, and then go through all the certification process again for that particular document, and try to make sure that nothing else is going to expire in that same time.

Right now we have all the Fayette county docs notarized, but the stupid county clerk lady left "early" yesterday so we didn't get the certification from her. I now don't like her, and if that is a job that you get elected into, I will not vote for her, take THAT. We need to find a Shelby county person to notarize our other docs and then one of us<me> will go to see the Shelby county clerk person. After that I'll just be FedEx shipping everything around, least we get an awesome discount. We have begun the nickle and dime you to death section of the process now as well. After the notary portion, every document stamp is about $5 bucks, not a big deal, but we have 13 docs, and 5 stops, not to mention the FedEx bill, :)

We have never done anything this complicated in our lives. School, college, wedding, a bio-baby, nothing has prepared us for the amount and level of work this involves.

Bitter Sweet

Well, after being very excited yesterday about the I-800a, today I was getting all the docs together and checking with the adoption agency to make sure I had everything and she said "...and the physical and criminal background checks have to be less than 6 months old...". I almost threw-up on my desk at work. The background check is pretty fast, I just have to go to the police station and get it. The physical is too, I just have to schedule it.

Oh, did I mention that I have a HUGE HUGE MASSIVE needle phobia? Mainly involving giving blood. I PURPOSELY waited to do the physical last for the homestudy because I'm a huge girl. But when it takes 6+ months to get the homestudy completed, AND approved by the agency, AND approved by homeland security it is more than 6 months later. So now I have to go and get another physical. I am extremely upset about this as it seems kind of retarded that they have a 6 month window on it. It doesn't matter I suppose ,I dont think there is much I can do about it. The only upside to it is that this time we don't have to get the tuberculosis test because that is a Tennessee social services only thing.

So my day went basically in the complete opposite direction I thought it was going. Instead of sending paperwork off to get the certification stamping process started, I'm once again setting up days off and visits to the evil doctor office to stick my arm with sharp pointy metal tubes, :(

This little girl better be extra cute, cause making kids naturally is way easier and way more fun.

Last document!

We got our I-800A today from the Homeland Security!! We were supposed to be doing a step-by-step thing with the whole process, but that just didn't happen. SO, here is where we are now.

We filled out all the generic paperwork for the adoption agency, made out checks, got our home study done, got our physicals<blood>, all the financial statements, finger printed by the Homeland Security, and the now required 'How to be the parent of an internationally adopted child' class.

So all in all, the paperwork was started in about March 08, approximately 6 months before the wifey turned 30. We couldn't get the home study notarized until she was officially 30 years of age, I believe we got it a little late, but thats ok. The amount of paperwork is insane, but the worse thing is having to depend on other people to get things done, ie signing forms, and notarizing forms etc etc.

Our home study had a slight typo in it so we had to get an addendum added to it, finally got that yesterday. I am FedEx'ing the addendum off to the Department of Homeland Security today in an attempt to get our USCIS Approval<i-800a> that says per the government "Hey, you guys can totally adopt a little baby from another country and bring them back here, k thanks!"

I seriously hope we get the form back sometime next week, but who knows. The I-800A is the last actual piece of the puzzle that we need before we can pack it ALL together and send it to get it notarized/certified by the states and Chinese Embassy people. Then after all that stamping and signing, we can send it to China to get it logged in to begin the waiting game.

Waiting you say? Why yes, the current wait time for a 0-13 month old perfectly healthy<as> baby girl is: 3-6 years.

Yep, years. BUT the wait time for a special needs child can be as little as 6 months. We have opted to go this route, for the sake of time, and the classification of 'special needs' is VERY broad. 20% of the special needs children have cleft pallet/lip, 18% have heart disease, 14% have 'Limb difference' which can be as simple as extra toes or fingers, or club foot. We are fortunate that we have excellent insurance and would cover these things. The medical form we fill out is very lengthy and specific as to what special needs you would be able to accommodate.
